LED Backlights, Our Salvation for Reference LCD Panels?

Many of us in the post production industry have been coping with the relatively limited options in reference monitors these days.

A recent glimmer of hope for many of us was the idea of an LED backlit LCD display as opposed to a cold cathode fluorescent, which would expand the color gamut of an LCD display to something we could more easily utilize for precision color decisions...

(Caveat: Yes, the links above are wikipedia...they are starting points only for those who are unfamiliar with the concepts, not the final indisputable words on these topics...wikipedia, like used cars, can be a great deal, but should always be shopped with caution...)

Martin Euredjian of eCinema Systems, makers of LCD panels for the post production industry, has some thoughts on this approach. As it turns out, eCinema had given this idea a shot some time ago. It may be time to look for a new technology to be the next step up for the LCD panel.

Martin has a whitepaper that he points out is, in his judgement, 'not a finished piece'. we'll have to call this a sneak peek.

Thanks to Martin for the insight and permission.
